Description
• 29-H-8 horizontal cabin style re-boiler furnace was
damaged due to fire in 1980’s. The furnace was
installed in 1956 as part of the original refinery
equipment.
• Heater remained in service until 2010 when refinery
leadership decided to look at replacing.

Scope of Work
• Structural evaluation of fire damaged 29-H-8 Heater.
• Determine if Heater requires replacement.
• Design of structural reinforcing to upgrade structural
frame.
Challenges
• Determining residual stresses due to fire damage.
• Convincing client replacement was not required.
Keys to Success
• Detailed analysis with Engineering Judgment.
• Reinforcing vs. replacement cost savings of $10MM
(+/-).
